How Precision Machine of Savannah Keeps Production Moving Forward

When you’re in the business of making parts that absolutely have to perform, there’s no room for guesswork. That’s been the mindset at Precision Machine of Savannah since the beginning. What started in a garage in 1988 is now a 60,000-square-foot operation supporting some of the most demanding industries out there — and they’ve done it by combining smart people, solid equipment, and a strong partnership with Morris and Okuma.

From Garage Startup to High-Mix Powerhouse

Precision Machine didn’t get where they are by accident. Over the past 35 years, the company has grown steadily by focusing on the fundamentals: doing the work, doing it right, and adapting as needed. Their team of skilled machinists, programmers, and engineers keeps production moving across three full shifts, handling a wide variety of jobs with efficiency.

As customer needs have evolved, so has the shop. They've added finishing, inspection, and assembly services to bring more processes in-house and maintain tighter control over quality and lead times. By following recognized industry standards and continuously investing in both space and capabilities, Precision Machine has remained flexible, consistent, and highly competitive in a fast-moving market.

Why Okuma Made Sense — Then and Now

Ask Steve Austin, their Manufacturing Manager, what’s changed over the years, and he’ll tell you: the machines have come a long way. Steve started out running second shift and now manages the entire floor, and he’s seen firsthand how Okuma platforms have helped them speed up setups, hit tighter tolerances, and take on more complex jobs with confidence.

“These machines just let us move faster and do more in fewer steps,” Steve said. “That’s a big deal when you’re trying to keep jobs moving through three shifts a day.”

Over time, the team has built up a lineup of Okuma equipment — and not just for variety’s sake. They’ve stayed with Okuma because the machines are tough, repeatable, and easy to trust. Whether it’s a new multitasking model or an older machine that’s been on the floor for years, they know what to expect.

When You Need Help, You Need It Fast

Of course, even the best equipment needs attention sometimes. And when that happens, Precision Machine turns to Morris. The service team knows the shop, knows the machines, and doesn’t waste time getting answers.

“I can call or text someone directly and get a real answer, fast,” said Steve. “If it’s something bigger, Morris is on it. They’ve even coordinated directly with the factory when we’ve hit a snag no one could figure out.”

Kent Burdett, their Morris Account Manager (left) is a familiar face around the shop. He knows what kind of parts they’re making, understands their floor setup, and helps keep everything from machine selection to foundation specs running smoothly. That kind of trust means less back-and-forth and more time cutting chips.

Doing It Their Way and Making It Work

Precision Machine doesn’t lean heavily on automation. In fact, they prefer to keep things hands-on. With so many part numbers and materials moving through the shop, they’ve found that people — not robots — give them the flexibility they need. They’ve got one pallet-pool machine, but beyond that, it’s skilled machinists and good process control.

They also take a smart approach to machine investment. “We almost always finance,” Steve explained. “Usually by the time the machine’s here, we’re already cutting when first payment’s coming due. It lines up well.”

That lean, practical mindset helps them grow without getting ahead of themselves — and keeps the team focused on what really matters: delivering good parts on time.

Machines That Last, Support That Sticks

One of the clearest signs that they’re doing things right? Most of the Okumas they’ve bought over the years are still on the floor. A couple of early models were finally retired after decades of use, but the rest are still running strong.

And when something needs fixing or tuning, Morris is just a phone call (or a text) away. Whether it’s helping with a tricky alarm, recommending the right model, or making sure foundation specs are dialed in, the support is always there.

That’s the kind of relationship that helps Precision Machine stay ready for whatever comes through the door next — more capacity, tighter tolerances, faster delivery. Whatever the challenge, they’ve built a shop that’s ready to take it on.
