When Alstom, a global leader in railway transportation technology, needed to streamline production for two different types of bogie frames, they turned to a trusted partner in multitasking innovation—SORALUCE. The result? A highly customized PM40 Bridge-Type Multitasking Machine that delivers tight tolerances, 24/7 uptime, and operational efficiency above 90%. Here’s how this advanced solution is helping Alstom set new standards in bogie machining.
Alstom required a solution flexible enough to handle different bogie designs while maintaining extreme accuracy across large parts. With operations running non-stop and tolerances as tight as 2 µm over nearly 1.7 meters, the project demanded not only power, but precision engineering and reliable automation.
The PM40 Bridge-Type Multitasking Machine was configured specifically to handle the size, complexity, and flexibility Alstom required. Key machine specs include:
196" X-axis, 177" Y-axis, and 78" Z-axis travel
Two massive 157" x 118" tables
Automatic Head Changer with 5 positions
Robot Tool Arena with a 395-tool capacity
This configuration enables seamless handling of large parts and complex geometries without constant tool change delays or manual intervention.
The machine’s automatic head changer offers five head positions for seamless angle changes. With custom angular heads, Alstom gets the reach and precision to nail every detail of bogie geometry.
Equipped with DAS+ (Dynamic Active Stabilizer) and Adaptive Control technology, the machine dynamically compensates for vibration and cutting conditions in real-time. These smart controls enhance tool life, improve surface finish, and maintain dimensional accuracy on every part.
Thanks to the dual-table setup and robust multitasking design, Alstom runs the PM40 machine 24/7 with an overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) greater than 90%. The machine’s ability to switch between bogie types without lengthy setup changes minimizes idle time and maximizes throughput.
